When I was studying ethnography at UCLA, theinstructorsspent a lot oftimedrumming into us thenecessity ofbeing a detachedobserver. "Goingnative" was considered theultimatesluragainst a fellowanthropologist. And yet, some of the best information that wehave about some societies comesfromtravelerswhohave "gonenative" in abig way. Case inpoint, the French artist Paul Gauguin, andhis luminous description of aseason in Tahiti in 1891.
Thisslighttravelogue of an artists'journey into theheart of theprimitiveboth enthralls and informs. Written as a potboiler after he returned to France, there aretwo distinctparts of thisbook. Thefirstpart is anextendednarrative of Gauguin's entry into theslow rhythms of Polynesian villagelife. Late in thebook we hit folklore paydirt. In anextendedpassage, Gauguin's Tahitian child-concubine relates tohim the Tahitiancosmogony, with anumber of myths, legendarygenealogies, ethnoastronomy, and a deluge story. Gauguin remarks on howadvanced the Polynesian lore seems, particularly their belief inevolutionaryprocesses and knowledge of the sphericalnature of the Earth. This is consistent with the Hawaiian Kumulipo. While not ascholarly dissertation by any means, this portion is awell written discussion of Tahitian beliefs.
Thebookends with Gauguin sailing back to France. As foreshadowed here, he returned to the Southseas. He died and was buried in the Marquesas in 1903.
